Dr Jane Muir

At 4cRisk, we are committed to maintaining a strong team of capable medical professionals – and today, we’re excited to announce Dr Jane Muir has achieved a remarkable milestone in her career! Not only has she been accepted as a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM), but she has also been awarded the prestigious 2024 Ramazzini Prize for the best scientific paper related to Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Now officially recognised as a Specialist Occupational and Environmental Physician,

Dr Muir has demonstrated excellence throughout her training, receiving the 2023 Deane Southgate Award for achieving the highest average percentage in the AFOEM written and practical examinations.

Dr Muir first studied medicine in the United Kingdom at Brighton and Sussex Medical School before moving to Australia, where she worked in emergency medicine and surgical roles until she completed her occupational physician training and accepted an offer to join 4cRisk.

Dr Jane Muir heads 4cRisk’s New South Wales operations, based out of our flagship Sydney clinic in Mascot. Dr Muir leads a range of clinical services such as pre-employment evaluations, health surveillance, injury management (available both in-person and via telehealth), and assessments for fitness for duty and independent medical examinations. She possesses a wealth of experience not only within the New South Wales workers compensation scheme but also across various other state schemes.

Dr. Muir is passionate about ensuring injured workers receive top-notch, coordinated care—working diligently between employers, insurers, and rehabilitation providers to uphold evidence-based medicine and emphasise the vital role that work plays in good health.

Dr Muir also provides consultancy services, regularly conducting site health risk assessments and medical emergency response planning and delivering large occupational health surveillance programs.

“Working in industries like coal mining, where assessing safety and fitness for work is critical, is rewarding for so many reasons,” Dr Muir said.

“First, I love knowing that my work impacts others’ lives, contributing directly to greater safety and wellbeing.

“I’m proud of my role in educating and empowering workers to take charge of their health and safety through the provision of training and resources, and of course, of the tangible positive results our safety programs have achieved, reducing injury rates and improving health outcomes”.

“It’s also really important to me to have the opportunity to build strong relationships across diverse teams and foster a positive work culture of health and safety.”

Given her depth and breadth of experience, Dr Muir is well-placed to provide clients and candidates with health and wellness training, crisis management assistance and mental health support.

She is also highly skilled in collaborative stakeholder communication, facilitating a unified approach to occupational health that includes management teams, safety officers, and employees, and is passionate about the continuous data-driven improvement of health programs.

Dr Muir takes a comprehensive, collaborative approach to conducting occupational health and medical assessments in all environments, particularly those considered high-risk.

This approach requires Dr Muir to stay informed on regulations and best practices, ensuring that her tailored assessments meet legal and industry standards and providing preventative health and wellbeing advice to workers.

In addition to her clinic-based occupational medicine practice, Dr. Muir has significant expertise in providing medical support for remote or high-risk projects, from the planning stages to implementation and ongoing care. Dr Muir has an in-depth understanding of the most significant hazards to occupational health across many industries and is adept at risk identification, health monitoring, and best-practice procedural development. Dr Muir is skilled in assessing physical and mental health hazards and implementing control measures to reduce risk.

Dr Muir is particularly experienced in leading health surveillance programs for hazardous substances such as coal and silica dust which may lead to occupational lung disease, including managing the diagnostic pathways and return to work programs for workers with a dust disease diagnosis.

As an occupational health physician, Dr Muir has also led a global medical assistance team, supporting local medical personnel in managing injuries at remote locations like oil rigs and mining sites. She has been instrumental in coordinating land and air medical evacuations across Australasia and internationally, a role that involved developing and implementing Medical Emergency Response Plans (MERPs), conducting telemedical consultations, and overseeing emergency response protocols and flight crews. In addition, she has provided consultancy services for numerous multinational and local organisations.

Drawing on extensive industry experience, Dr Muir has copious health and safety management advice to offer mining, resource, construction, transport and other workers in high-risk environments.

“First, know the risks,” Dr Muir says. “Knowledge is crucial for safety. Familiarise yourself with best practices and specific hazards of your job through safety training, and use the appropriate PPE as a last line of defence against injuries.”

“Second, follow safety protocols and procedures to protect yourself and others, and make sure you’re familiar with the emergency procedures that apply to your workplace, including evacuation routes and first aid protocols. In an emergency, preparation is everything.”

“Third, foster a culture of open communication. This not only strengthens the team but also encourages all team members to report any unsafe conditions or practices and keep others safe.”

“Finally, encourage all team members to prioritise their physical and mental health. Maintain a healthy lifestyle, take plenty of breaks, and seek support when needed. When all team members look after their health and wellness, the workplace is more resilient against health risks.”

The 4cRisk team couldn’t be more thrilled to have Dr Muir onboard as a Fellow of Occupational Medicine. Dr. Muir is now available for appointments at our Mascot Clinic. For inquiries, feel free to contact our friendly team at 4cRisk.
